Dental Implant Treatment

A dental implant is an artificial tooth “root” that is artificially placed in your mouth to support dental prostheses such as dentures or bridges. They are screws made of tissue-friendly Titanium and inserted into the jawbone that serves as a root for the missing tooth.

What is an implant?

Implants are titanium-containing screw-like structures that are placed into the jawbone to eliminate tooth deficiencies and function as tooth roots. Missing teeth are completed by screwing porcelain teeth onto the implants placed in the jawbone.

What is the advantage of getting an implant?

Thanks to the implant, missing teeth can be replaced without damaging the healthy teeth. In edentulous patients, it is possible to make fixed prostheses that do not come out instead of removable prostheses thanks to dental implants.

What does implant success depend on?

The bone quality in the area where the implant is placed is very important. Due to the surface structure of the implant, the implant brand also plays an important role in the success of the implant treatment. It should be ensured that the physician who will perform implant application is trained and experienced in this field.

How long does dental implant treatment take? How is it done?

The first step in implant treatment is to place the implant into the jawbone. In order for permanent teeth to be made on the implants, the implant is expected to fully merge with the jawbone. This process usually takes 2-2.5 months. In cases such as soft jaw bone, bone powder addition to the jaw bone, this period can be extended up to 4-6 months. After the union of the implant and the jawbone is completed, porcelain teeth suitable for the missing tooth area are produced with the measurements taken from the mouth and attached to the implant.

Is implant surgery difficult? Will I feel pain?

During the implant operation, the area to be implanted is completely numbed with local anaesthesia. With the correct dose and application, there is no pain during implant placement and nothing uncomfortable is felt. After the numbness subsides, the pain can be relieved with painkillers.

Will my face swell after implant surgery?

The edema (swelling) that occurs after the implant operation varies according to factors such as the number of implants placed and the use of jawbone powder. While most patients with 1-2 implants have a slight swelling, more oedema-swelling is expected in patients with jawbone powder or a large number of implants. In other words, this situation varies according to the size of the operation. Ice application at certain intervals for 24 hours after the operation reduces swelling.

Is there a risk that the body will not accept the implant?

Titanium, from which the implant is made, is one of the most tissue-friendly, i.e. biocompatible materials. It is not correct information that the implant is rejected by the body. Failures in implant treatment occur due to the failure of the implant to fuse properly with the jawbone or deterioration of the fusion, melting or infection of the jawbone around the implant. This situation may develop depending on the patient’s general healing potential, the patient’s oral hygiene, the quality of the jawbone, the surface and raw material properties of the implant used, that is, the brand of the implant.

Why is the implant brand important?

One of the aims of implant treatment is that the implants placed instead of the artificial tooth root serve our patients for a lifetime. There are many brands of implants on the market, but unfortunately not all of these brands provide the same quality. Implant brands that have been available in the market for years, have proven their quality and are successful worldwide are preferred by both patients and our physicians. There are well-established and well-known global implant brands produced using advanced technologies and obtained as a result of long-term studies and researches. In these studies, the condition of the implants in the jaw bone over the years is evaluated, factors such as the sound continuation of the relationship of fusion with the jaw bone and the continuity of the bone around the implant are examined. As a result of long-term studies, successful implant brands have been proven to serve patients for many, many years without any problems. Furthermore, well-established implant brands are available all over the world, provide a guarantee for any problems that may develop with their products. In Denthaus clinic, we work with global, well-established implant brands that have been used all over the world for many years.

Can implants be placed simultaneously with tooth extraction?

If suitable conditions are met, implant placement concurrently with tooth extraction is a very common technique and shortens the duration of implant treatment. After the examination by our specialised physicians, you will be informed whether this application is suitable for you.

Can temporary teeth be made after implantation? Do I have to be toothless during implantation?

Today, there are treatment techniques where we can provide our patients with temporary fixed teeth on the day of implant placement or the day after the operation. Temporary fixed teeth screwed on the implants placed for the treatment of single tooth missing or completely edentulous jaws increase the quality of life of our patients and contribute to the nutritional and aesthetic status of the patients until the permanent teeth are made. You will be informed whether these techniques are suitable for you after the examination by our specialist physicians.

Is one implant required for each missing tooth?

One implant may not be required for each missing tooth, depending on the length of the missing tooth, two or more implants are placed intermittently, and a bridge-shaped prosthesis can be made on it. The number of implants to be placed is determined only after the clinical and radiographic examination of the treating physician.

Can implants be placed in patients using removable (palate-shaped) dentures?

Patients who are totally toothless can have fixed teeth with implants in cases where there is sufficient bone volume and can get rid of removable prostheses. In patients without sufficient bone volume, fixed implant treatment can be performed after bone formation procedures.

It is very difficult to use removable prosthesis especially in the lower jaw. Patients complain of constantly moving prostheses. In such cases, 2-4 implants placed in the lower jaw eliminate the mobility problem of such prostheses and the quality of life of patients wearing removable prostheses is improved.

Implant treatment is an excellent option for patients who want to get rid of prostheses that cause nausea because they cover the palate area in the upper jaw and want fixed teeth.

What can be done if there is not enough bone in the area to be implanted / in case of bone resorption?

Bone thickness, height and density in the implant area are important criteria for us. Following the examination, the deficiencies detected in the bone structure in the area where we will place the implant are treated with augmentation of bone volume. For these treatments, ready-made bone grafts (jaw bone powders) and membranes (bone coverings) are mostly used. These methods can be applied simultaneously with implant placement. In some cases, treatment for augmentation of bone volume is performed before implant treatment, and implant placement may be preferred after the bone quality in the area is ensured.

Are implant treatment prices high?

İImplants are materials made of high purity titanium, produced with advanced technologies. Therefore, market entry prices are costly. The high or low cost of implant treatment depends on the brand of the implant, the extra materials used during the procedure (jaw bone powder, bone cover) and the type of porcelain applied on the implant.
